Perms are now available in special formulas for even the lightest shades of tinted or bleached hair. However, it’s always best to ask for a strand test to be done first. The stylist will put a few strands of your hair into perming solution and then neutralizer for up to 15 minutes and then check the condition. This is the best way to make sure that your hair isn’t going to fry  To see what condition your hair is in is to put a few strands into a glass of water. If they sink, it means that your hair is soaking up water because it is dry from damage. If they float, it’s healthy and in good condition.

# Shampoo gently with a shampoo specially created for permed hair. Aggressive shampoos or scrubbing can cause early relaxation.

# Condition the hair with conditioners specially made for permed hair. Permed hair has varying porosity – ordinary conditioners may over or under condition hair.

# As perm grows out, spray a volumizing product or gel at the roots and blow dry at the scalp to create added lift.

# Do not wrap in a towel turban when you get out of the shower with wet hair. The added friction can knot and damage vulnerable wet hair. Instead, carefully blot hair dry.

# Don’t brush hair when wet. Comb with a wide-tooth comb, working tangles out as you move from the ends toward the scalp

Even if your hair is healthy, dryness can easily make it frizzy. To keep frizz at bay (and even make the detangling process easy), it would be advisable to make use of a leave-in conditioner. Again, make sure that the conditioner belongs to a good brand and is meant for permed hair only.

Permed hair often becomes victim to the problem of fly aways, another consequence of dry hair. Using a serum would be the best bet for controlling them. You can also make use of gel and mousse, but they might make the curls crunchy and sticky. Some people like the wet look with a perm and some people like to blow dry a perm. Whatever your preference is keep in mind that some styling products contain a lot of alcohol witch will dry your hair out. Choose a glaze or a gel vs. a mousse (unless it says alochol- free). Glazes and gels contain less alcohol and are better for your hair. Be careful when blow-drying your perm that you don’t over dry your hair. Only blow -dry your hair 85 to 90 percent dry. This prevents frizz and split ends.
