If you are above 50 , your cardiologist have have advising you to start exercise, probably because you have certain risk factors for coronary artery , it can be due to age , family history or blood pressure or life style. If that is the case it would be best to start with a supervised exercise programme if you have back pain.

A spine specialist or a physi0therapist will outline a routine that can help you to imporve the mechanical efficiency of your back. Side by side low impact exercises like walking and non impact exercises like cycling and swimming can be performed despite a bad back to improve cardiovascular fitness. Start with 10 to 15 minutes of walk at a moderate speed, most of the days of a week. and then progress it to 45 minutes.

Chair exercise

Chair exercises will not improve cardiovascular fitness to a good extent. The chair may be used to support the back while during seated exercises or to increase base of support while doing standing exercise. How ever you will require some equipment like dumb-bells or elastic bands to provide the necessary resistance to strengthen your muscles. Doing nee lifts and cycling your legs while seated can also tone your abs.
