Foods that provide additional health benefits beyond  their nutritional value is known as functional foods. these functional foods are gaining importance in food industry. Many dairy products that fall into the category contain probiotics. Our colon is filled with millions of bacteria some of them may do harm to you  but most of them help with digestion and maintaining a balanced gastrointestinal system.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that occur naturally in the gut and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria . They include lactobacilli and bifibodacteria, which also are available via dietary supplements. Promoting these bacteria will help your guts to perform well and help in digestion. Probiotics are most closely associated with diary products and other diary foods may increase the chance that that bacteria will survive high acid levels in the stomach, and exposure to digestive enzymes and bile in the intestines.  Probiotic supplements are another way to increase your consumption, you get lot more probiotics in this way. Side effects tend to be mild which includes gas and bloating.
